So, I made a leap of faith (as well as receiving an urgent plea from Dara) and had Cameron changed my kinda floofy seat to the hard white skinny seat that Dara had sent me.  At this point what did I have to lose?

I met Ann at the 40 mile mark...got on the bike and crossed my fingers.  First town we stopped was Dayton Iowa which was welcoming and teenyweeny.

And it was there that I had my first heavenly piece of Iowa pie.  I let the checkout girl pick it out for me...mixed berry.
DELICIOUS!

As the miles were riden, I realized that I was in much better shape using this new seat.  I will admit it wasn't the most comfortable several hours I have ever spent but it was acceptable.  And as a result I had a great ride...a great ride.

But I was seemingly the only one. The route was a tad hillier and the temps were just a bit lower but while we were riding east the wind was strongly blowing west.
We were riding from left to right in this photo.

So, the ride was the hardest ride of the week but it was such a break through for me that I will likely keep it up there as one of my best days I've had on the ragbrai roads.

You can see that I don't need much to keep me happy while here...pie and a comfy seat.  And today I had both!

I will leave you with a few pics from the day.

  1. I remember when I was riding that it would take my but a week to get used to riding on those hard little seats. After that it was easy. Sounds like you are doing great. Keep up the good work.
